Nara Food Guide: From Local Specialties to Michelin Counters
Nara was Japan's capital more than 1,300 years ago, and that long history still shapes what ends up on the plate. Most visitors come for the temples and the deer, then leave without eating past the day-trip basics. That's a mistake. This guide covers both sides of the city — the centuries-old local specialties you can eat on the street, and the destination counters worth planning an evening around.
What to Eat in Nara: Local Specialties
Some of Nara's best food has nothing to do with Michelin stars. These four specialties have been made here for centuries, and you can try most of them without a reservation.
Chagayu

Nara's oldest comfort food is also its simplest. Chagayu is a loose rice porridge simmered in roasted hojicha tea. Monks at Todai-ji (the city's great Buddhist temple) have eaten it before ceremonies for more than 1,200 years. The roasted tea gives the rice a nutty, savory edge that plain rice porridge never has. Today it turns up on menus across the city, often as a gentle opener to a larger meal.
Kakinoha-zushi

If you buy one edible souvenir in Nara, make it this one. Kakinoha-zushi is vinegared fish pressed onto sushi rice and wrapped in a persimmon leaf. The technique dates back around 300 years, to a time when landlocked Nara had no easy way to keep fish fresh. Persimmon leaves are rich in tannins, which slow bacteria and let the sushi keep for days. You can grab it from a stand right outside Nara Station, which makes it the rare regional delicacy you can eat on the train home.
Kuzumochi

Nara's signature sweet is all about texture. Kuzumochi is made from kuzu, a plant starch prized for its clean, wobbly set. The best kuzu comes from Yoshino, in Nara's mountainous south. The result is a cool, jiggly cake that's barely sweet and more about mouthfeel than sugar. If you think you don't care for Japanese sweets, this is the one to reconsider.
Narazuke

Narazuke is the pickle that put the city's name on the map — literally. These are gourds and vegetables cured in sake lees, the fragrant paste left behind after pressing rice wine. The curing gives them a deep amber color and a heady, boozy aroma. They work equally well with tea, as a drinking snack, or over plain rice. It's an acquired taste, but one worth acquiring while you're in its hometown.
Nara's Fine Dining Scene
For all its casual classics, Nara has quietly built a serious fine dining scene. As an old capital, it leans heavily Japanese, but French, innovative, and other kitchens have carved out a place too. The 2026 Michelin Guide Nara lists four two-star restaurants, 18 one-star, 11 Bib Gourmand, and 45 Michelin Selected restaurants. Many fold the city's history into the room itself, setting refined or inventive cooking inside old townhouses and converted spaces. Just as many lean on Nara's own produce — the Yamato vegetables and mountain ingredients that grow in the surrounding countryside.
Where to Eat in Nara: 11 Restaurants and Bars to Book
1. Oryori Hirooka
Few chefs make a stronger case for eating local than Nobuyuki Hirooka. His whole philosophy comes down to one idea — taste Nara — and he's held a Michelin star every year since 2022. Hirooka grew up here in a restaurant family and opened his own place in 2018, first in far-flung Gojo before moving into central Nara in 2025. He builds each course from Nara produce backed by the finest ingredients from across Japan. The somen course, made with local noodles and whatever's in season, is a fixture of every menu — and reason enough to book.

2. Oryori Hanagaki
Hanagaki is one of the hardest seats to land in Nara, and the exclusivity is the point. The kitchen serves just one party at lunch and one at dinner, so the entire meal is built around your table. Chef Toshihiko Furuta trained his palate young in a sushi-kappo family, trailing his father through Japan's finest restaurants, and now cooks food that impresses even his peers — enough for two Michelin stars in every edition of the Nara guide. Antique serving vessels, which Furuta collects, turn each course into something closer to theater, while the garden outside shifts with the seasons. To book, check the open dates posted on the restaurant's website, then confirm by phone.

3. La Trace
LA TRACE is where Nara's produce meets classical French technique, filtered through a chef who clearly loves telling its story. Owner-chef Ryo Sato trained in Burgundy and cooked at a French restaurant in Tokyo's Azabu-Juban before settling in Nara, his wife's hometown. He's built genuine relationships with local growers, and it shows in the quality of what he sources. The omakase menu lists only ingredient names; when each dish arrives, Sato explains the producer and the story behind it. It's earned a Michelin star every year since 2022 and a place on a national French top-100 list, and the drink pairings are worth saying yes to.

4. Gokan Uogin
The theater of the kamado is what sets GOKAN UOGIN apart. Chef Shohei Kakutani spent 13 years in respected Japanese kitchens before opening his own counter, which has held a Michelin star since 2022. He builds a single daily omakase around the best fish of the morning and Nara produce. The rice is local Hinohikari, cooked one party at a time in an earthenware pot over a wood-fired kamado. Steam and the scent of cooking rice fill the room — a finish most counters can't match.

5. Nara Okada
Okada is proof that patience pays off. Chef Naoki Okada spent 16 years at the two-Michelin-starred Kaiseki Masuda in Osaka before opening here in 2019, and earned his own star by 2022. The single omakase menu is kaiseki that leans hard on seasonal ingredients. Okada wants you to drink with it, so he stocks sake alongside Champagne and wine chosen to match his cooking. He's exacting about the tableware and the small details around each setting, which makes this a meal to take in with your eyes as much as your palate.

6. VILLA COMMUNICO
VILLA COMMUNICO lets you sleep inside the view. This one-Michelin-starred auberge sits on a hillside overlooking Nara Park, with Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha (Kasuga Grand Shrine) in the distance. The cooking is innovative and French-rooted, from owner-chef Daiki Horita, who trained in Italy and studied French cooking in Kyoto before opening in 2018. Horita finishes most dishes over a wood fire, which he sees as a way to channel Nara's raw landscape and long history. You can sometimes book dinner without staying the night, so it's worth an inquiry either way.

7. Ajinokaze Nishimura
Ajinokaze Nishimura is where sourcing becomes an art form. Chef Nobuhisa Nishimura was born into a Nara sushi family and trained for a decade at a local washoku restaurant before opening in 2015. Years of relationships with other chefs give him access to ingredients he's genuinely satisfied with, and he lets those ingredients lead. The result is kaiseki that honors tradition while spotlighting the produce — enough to win a Michelin star every year since 2022 and the respect of Japan's most demanding eaters. With just 10 counter seats and omakase-only service at both lunch and dinner, it stays intimate by design.

8. Tori Yamaguchi
Tori Yamaguchi exists for one ingredient: Yamato-niku-dori, Nara's prized native chicken. Owner Kazuhiro Yamaguchi draws on more than 30 years in restaurants, and this yakitori counter is the culmination of them. He sources top-grade Yamato-niku-dori from a trusted specialist he's worked with for years, a quality that's hard to find outside the prefecture. The skewers are the draw, but the à la carte chicken dishes have their own following. Ordering plate by plate rather than by set course is part of the appeal, and it's twice earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

9. Sakedokoro Kura
Sakedokoro Kura is where you go to drink in old Nara, in every sense. This izakaya has run since 1954 and occupies a converted traditional storehouse, pouring local sake alongside seasonal dishes. Eleven seats wrap around a U-shaped counter with a pot of oden at the center, portioned out as you order — and no, you can't reserve. The specialty is kimoyaki, grilled chicken liver heaped into a bowl, finished with a well-seasoned egg yolk that most regulars won't skip. A half-size order means solo diners are welcome too.

10. Yakitori Mochizuki
Yakitori Mochizuki is where a Tokyo pedigree meets whole-bird craft. Chef Hirokazu Bando trained at the acclaimed Souten in Tokyo before returning home to open his own counter in 2013. He buys brand jidori — Omi black chicken, Kumano and Awao varieties — as whole birds and breaks them down himself, which puts rare cuts on the menu you won't find everywhere. Michelin-listed and a regular on Japan's yakitori top-100 list, it pairs that pedigree with sourcing and fire he's refined on his own. There are only eight seats, so it's a tough table — but worth the effort.

11. LAMP BAR
Even in a historic city, LAMP BAR is a destination in its own right. Owner-bartender Michito Kaneko started out at the long-running BAR TENDER in Wakayama, opened LAMP BAR back home in Nara in 2011, and in 2015 was named Bartender of the Year at the World Class global final. That title still pulls drinkers from around the world to this room. His cocktails put a personal spin on even the standards, and the bar is split into three rooms, each with its own concept and mood. It's the place to slow down and end a Nara evening properly.
