Accessible Dining in Kyoto: 8 Wheelchair-Friendly Picks

Oct 26, 2026

Discover 8 wheelchair-friendly restaurants in Kyoto, including four Michelin one-star picks like VELROSIER and KOKE, with tips on entrances and booking.

8 Wheelchair-Accessible Restaurants

Looking for fine dining in Kyoto that works for wheelchair users? These eight restaurants are a strong place to start. They include four restaurants awarded one Michelin star in 2026 (VELROSIER, Restaurant Hiramatsu Kodaiji, Jean-Georges at The Shinmonzen, and KOKE), along with the Michelin Selected Reine des prés and TOKI. The cuisines range from French, sushi, and washoku (traditional Japanese cuisine) to a creative blend of Spanish and Okinawan flavors.

Most have spacious interiors with wide aisles and generous gaps between seats, but entrance conditions vary, and several have steps, slopes, or stone paths. Below, we walk through the route from the entrance to your seat at each restaurant, so check the details before you go. When you make a reservation, be sure to let the restaurant know a wheelchair user will be joining!

1. VELROSIER

Michelin Star
Michelin Guide
2026

VELROSIER is pioneering a new field it calls Chinese gastronomy, pairing a Chinese culinary foundation with state-of-the-art cooking equipment and plating as delicate as French cuisine.

Many restaurants strip dishes back to let a single ingredient shine, but VELROSIER does the opposite. Its "add on" approach deliberately combines ingredients that could each be the star of a dish, matched so their umami builds on one another. Beyond wine, the drinks list includes Shaoxing rice wine and Chinese tea pairings that suit the cuisine.

The restaurant is on the second floor of a commercial complex. Head straight out of the elevator and you will see a lattice-style door on your left, which opens onto a flat corridor leading to the dining room. The spacious interior has 16 seats, including round tables and sofa seating, with plenty of room between them. The lighting is a little dim, so take care when moving around.

2. Restaurant Hiramatsu Kodaiji

Michelin Star
Michelin Guide
2026

Classic French cuisine meets a picturesque Kyoto streetscape at Restaurant Hiramatsu Kodaiji. Traditional techniques draw out the full potential of each ingredient, and every plate is as beautiful as a work of art, setting the stage for an elegant meal. Local flavors feature throughout, from fresh seafood and full-flavored game to seasonal Kyoto vegetables.

The menu is course-only, but there are as many as seven options each for lunch and dinner, including celebration plans and a vegan course.

The four-story building is spacious throughout, much like a small art museum. There are steps at the entrance, but staff will help you inside. The barrier-free interior houses a 38-seat main dining room, and two fully private rooms (available for an additional fee) sit on the same grounds. Wide entrances and aisles, along with generous space at every seat, make getting around in a wheelchair easy.

3. Sushi Oga Higashiyama

Tuna is the main draw at Sushi Oga Higashiyama, which sets it apart in the Kansai region (Kyoto, Osaka, and the surrounding area), where few sushi restaurants make tuna their focus. The fish comes from Yamayuki, one of Japan's leading tuna wholesalers, and matches the quality served at top sushi restaurants in Tokyo's Ginza district. Each cut is prepared differently to draw out its umami.

The tuna nigiri (hand-pressed) sushi is paired with the restaurant's own rice seasoned with red vinegar, whose rich aroma and mellow acidity bring out the flavor of every piece. This is a sister restaurant of the hugely popular Sushi Oga in Osaka, where reservations fill up a year in advance. Here, a young head chef blends tradition with originality to create one-of-a-kind sushi.

The restaurant is on the second basement level of a resort hotel, marked by a gate reminiscent of a samurai residence. There is a small step where the sidewalk meets the hotel grounds, and tactile paving lines the pedestrian entrance and path. An elevator goes down to the restaurant, where all 10 counter seats have plenty of space around them.

4. Jean-Georges at The Shinmonzen

Michelin Star
Michelin Guide
2026

On the ground floor of the boutique hotel The Shinmonzen, Jean-Georges at The Shinmonzen serves French cuisine created by internationally acclaimed chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The modern French menu weaves in American and Asian influences and makes generous use of local ingredients, from Kyoto vegetables to fresh seafood and meat. Refreshing new dishes appear with each season, and the cellar holds more than 3,000 bottles of wine.

There is a step and tactile paving at the hotel entrance, and past the sliding door, a long, flat corridor leads to the restaurant. Seating includes six counter seats, 16 at tables, 10 on the terrace, and a private room for up to six, all generously spaced. Note that the counter is set higher than a standard table. Staff can assist in English.

5. Queen of the Meadows

New selection
Michelin Guide
2026

Reine des prés serves pared-back French cuisine that lets ingredients speak for themselves. Each course is built around the best ingredients of the day, and every dish feels free and inventive. Plenty of Kyoto vegetables bring a strong seasonal touch.

The restaurant’s concept centers on three elements: ingredients, precise heat, and simplicity. The chef visits producers in person, getting a feel for the land and talking with growers before choosing what to use. Every ingredient is then cooked simply, with the heat and technique tailored to suit it. Chicken is cooked at a low temperature to stay juicy, while fish is timed to account for carryover cooking.

Although the restaurant faces the street, there is a small step and a gentle slope in front of the entrance. The door opens outward, so take care on the slope if you are opening it from a wheelchair. Inside, the compact dining room has just six table seats, with no major steps and generous spacing.

6. KOKE

Michelin Star
Michelin Guide
2026

KOKE creates new flavors by bringing together Spanish technique and the food culture of Okinawa, home of chef Yusaku Nakamura. Water and fire are its guiding themes. Spring water drawn from a well on the property and the wood-fire cooking Nakamura mastered during his training produce dishes that engage all five senses.

Nakamura carries on the culinary lineage of Ca Sento, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Kobe. The menu also pays tribute to his home, reinterpreting Okinawan dishes such as chi-irichi (pork skin and trotters braised with pig's blood) and the Ryukyu Bon, inspired by traditional cuisine of the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429–1879).

There is a step where the road meets the property, and a long stone path with a right-angle turn leads to the entrance on the ground floor of the complex. Inside are six counter seats and two round tables for up to four, all with ample space around them. The counter is roughly the same height as a standard table, and the tables have no sharp corners.

7. TOKI

New selection
Michelin Guide
2026

At TOKI, the star of the show is fond (the stock at the heart of French sauces), made here with Kyoto's soft water. Chef Tetsuya Asano, the first Japanese chef to serve as deputy head chef of the main dining room at the Ritz Paris, builds his innovative French cuisine around it.

Kyoto's soft water extracts flavor easily, making it ideal for fond. It also helps local vegetables grow with deep umami and aroma. With top-quality seafood and meat arriving from the surrounding coast and mountains, Asano can draw on a wide range of stocks made from vegetables, seafood, and meat, giving each dish its own layers of flavor.

The restaurant sits on the ground floor of a five-star hotel, beyond a massive temple-style gate. There are no major steps, though it is a bit of a walk from the gate to the entrance. The long, simply designed interior has 12 counter seats, 26 dining seats, and a private room for six, all with plenty of space to move around.

8. Muroi / Takagamine

Michelin Guide
2022

Vegetables are the star at Muroi, a kappo (counter-style Japanese) restaurant. Each course uses as many as 80 kinds of vegetables, from fresh Kyoto vegetables grown nearby to seasonal produce sourced at the market. Vegan and vegetarian diets can also be accommodated.

Owner-chef Shigeru Muroi trained at top restaurants in Japan and abroad, bringing techniques and insights from around the world into his cooking. He is just as particular about water. Every day, he drives about 10 minutes to Kyomi Pass to collect natural spring water for making dashi broth and cooking rice.

Although Muroi faces the road, there is a step between the street and the property. The 140-year-old building's stone paving is noticeably uneven and slightly sloped, so take care when crossing it. Inside the renovated traditional house, the eight counter seats are well spaced with wide aisles, and some staff speak English.

FAQ

Which Michelin-starred restaurants in Kyoto are accessible for wheelchair users?

The article introduces four Michelin one-star restaurants in 2026. "VELROSIER" is located on the second floor of a commercial facility and can be accessed via a flat passage after taking the elevator. "Jean-Georges at The Shinmonzen" can be reached by passing through the hotel's sliding door and along a flat corridor. Although the entrance of "Restaurant Hiramatsu Kodaiji" has steps, staff will assist and guide you, and the interior is designed to be barrier-free. "KOKE" requires passing through a stone corridor with a right-angle turn, but the interior space is quite ample. Additionally, "Muroi," which has previously received a Michelin star, also has a spacious interior, but the stone floor in the garden area is uneven, so extra caution is needed when moving around.

What should wheelchair users be aware of before making a reservation?

It is recommended to inform the restaurant of accompanying wheelchair users when making a reservation and to confirm the accessibility of the entrance.

Note that there is a small height difference and a gentle slope in front of the entrance of "Reine des prés," and the door opens outward. There is also a height difference at the boundary of the premises where "KOKE" and "Sushi Ooga Higashiyama" are located. Although "TOKI" does not have a noticeable height difference, there is a distance from the main entrance to the shop. Additionally, the lighting inside "VELROSIER" is dim, and the bar counter at "Jean-Georges at The Shinmonzen" is relatively high, which can be considered when choosing a seat.

Can vegetarians dine at these restaurants?

Yes, they can. "Restaurant Hiramatsu Kodaiji" offers vegan courses, with up to seven courses available for both lunch and dinner. "Muroi," which focuses on vegetables, uses up to 80 types of vegetables in its courses and can accommodate vegan and vegetarian needs. If you have dietary restrictions, be sure to inform the restaurant when making a reservation.
