
About
Imperial Viking SAL is the Imperial Hotel’s iconic buffet restaurant, renowned as the birthplace of the “Viking” dining style in Japan—where guests are invited to enjoy as much of their favorite dishes as they wish.
In 1957, then-President Tetsuzo Inumaru was inspired by the Danish smörgåsbord. The following year, he opened Japan’s first buffet restaurant. Although the price was equal to a night's stay at the Imperial Hotel, it became an instant success without any advertising. The name “Viking” was inspired by the popular pirate film The Vikings, which was showing in Japan at the time.
Centered on refined French cuisine, the buffet also features authentic Japanese and Chinese dishes, offering an exceptional culinary journey across a variety of traditions.
